The M76 became an icon for snipers from the former Yugoslavian states, and was frequently tied to the bloody images from the Yugoslavian and Kosovo War with civilian snipers and military snipers dueling in the cityscape. As a non-Soviet state, Yugoslavia had no obligation to do what Moscow wanted. In return, when it wanted a semi-auto sniper weapon, Moscow did not give the Yugoslavians the Soviet SVD Dragunov. Zastava did what some other eastern countries did when they didn't have the blueprints to an SVD: they scaled up their Kalashnikov. Which the Yugoslavian Kalashnikov pattern, the M70, was already a reverse-engineered AK47 type 3 with many local modifications. The M76 was the result when paired with the massive 7.92x57mm ammunition stores that the Yugoslavian National Army had. So how does a big AK shooting a very big cartridge do? Let's find out.
