Guy and Leonard A-R-West have published their third book about black powder military breechloaders, "Development of the Podewils & Werder Rifles of the Bavarian Army". It follows the same format at their previous books on the Chassepot and Dreyse systems, including the hand-drawn illustrations. This new volume has a bit less on the actual rifles than the previous books; I suspect there was simply less material available to find on these two specific short-lived models. The majority of the 159 pages are about ancillary aspects of the guns - bayonets, cartridge pouches, training, targets, cartridge manufacture, and so on. It is definitely a book worth getting for someone interested in these arms - there is little else published in English in any real depth on the subject. The books are a bit on the expensive side at 45 Pounds plus shipping - I would suggest buying two or all three volumes at once if you are interested in them.

It really should be called just "Fren...
