Of all nations in WW1, the Russian Empire was mainly the one attributed to widely using the lever action rifle in a modern conflict by chambering the 1895 in 7.62x54R, a respectable service cartridge for accuracy and distance shooting. Because of this, the Russian Contract 1895 has become the single example of military employment of a lever action in a sea of bolt action rifles chambered in full-powered service loads... but should we have adapted lever action rifles all along? Could lever actions have tipped the scale of modern combat? We investigate. We'd like to thank C&Rsenal for sharing their footage with us and making excellent episodes on the Russian Contract 1895 and S&W no.3.
