In 1848 the modern Swiss confederacy is formed and the Swiss set about finally unifying their military structure and equipment. The first rifle to be univerally adopted for general service was the 1851 federal carbine to equip the elite sharpshooter compagnies, who, up until that point, had largely used whatever rifles they wanted. This part 1 will cover the history that led to its adoption and discuss the many unique features it has. Part 2 will focus on the service ammunition.
