With a short development time and an impossible set of requirements, the Luftwaffe indeed ended up with a "Paratrooper's Rifle" that was shorter and lighter than a Kar98k, capable of firing open bolt full auto and closed bolt semi auto... but was it truly that easy of a development? Developing and designing new firearms is a DIFFICULT process. Most people forget. Earlier we worked with Smith Machine Group who loaned us their prototype FG42 Type 1 to get our hands on some familiarization for the system. We must emphasize that this is the prototype S/N 0001, and not the production models that actually work very well. The machine work was impressive on the automatic rifle, but there were certainly issues with the rifle operations. While most would likely be upset and send the weapon back, we wanted to further diagnose it and see if there was anything that we could do to fix it, which sent us on a path to further understand some the problems that the Germans likely faced during the development of the FG42, and why some of those interesting design characteristics never did carry onto modern weapon designs. Special thanks to: Ian @ForgottenWeapons Karl @InrangeTv Stick with us, this was a bumpy ride, but the prototype rifle is back with SMG and will return to the show once we get the issues ironed out!
